Short for "safeguard," saggar is a kiln container from ancient China. Once used to stack wares, it holds materials that burn to create striking colors and textures.
These wares are made by placing horse hair on the glowing surface of a 1200-degree pot. It sizzles and crackles leaving localized carbon markings which create gorgeous dynamic patterns.
Originating in 12th century eastern Europe, the hot piece is taken out of the kiln and immersed into a fermented liquid of water, flour, yeast, and sugar. The primitive quality connects the finished pot to the earth.
